Sail-World New Zealand: 22 November 2010

49ers - Medal Race - Perth International Regatta  Perth 2011
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 22 November 2010

There's plenty of racing news in this edition of Sail-World.

In Dubai the Louis Vuitton Trophy continues. We've been watching a lot of the racing on the internet (see the SailTV story for the link) and it has been very good. Much more enjoyable than previous editions with their delays and frequent periods of no racing, or struggling with trying to run a full series on just two boats.

While there may be nothing hanging on this series, such as a world title or whatever. And to some it may be exhibition sailing. But when you are dealing with these competitors, no-one just participates - they always play for keeps - doesn't matter if it is the America's Cup or a game of pool on a rest day. So far there has been some very good racing and great coverage. Dubai has been a great regatta and venue.

The dhow racing over the weekend was a rare experience for western crews, and we have some great images from that event, and the other world that it represents, in this edition of Sail-World.

This is, of course, the last edition of the Louis Vuitton Trophy and when the new America's Cup World Series gets underway in June 2011, it will be in the AC45 catamaran class.

Closer to the present we have a great report and images from the second round of the Paper Tiger Grand Prix series sailed at Lake Ngaroto. Where they pulled a superb fleet of 25 catamarans for some great racing. This story was submitted through Sail-Worlds home page submission system.

In Perth, Australia (not Scotland), the NZL Sailing Team has been competing in the Perth International regatta - a prelude to next year's ISAF World Championships and principal Olympic qualifier regatta. JP Tobin won a bronze medal in the boardsailing, with New Zealand crews finishing fourth in three classes. We have reports and some images in this edition of Sail-World.

Scott Pedersen - 2010 Ngaroto Paper Tiger Regatta  Ross Wrenn

Locally the Telecom Match Racing championships were staged over the Thursday, Friday and weekend, with a great win for one of the fast rising New Zealand teams on the international match racing circuit. We have been running daily reports from the organisers and competitors, on our website with are republished in this newsletter.

David and Craig blazing a trail in the Javelins - Rotoiti Spring Sprints 2010  Nadine Moeller

Last Thursday we were privileged to attend a function staged in Auckland by the New Zealand Olympic Committee to honour the six women who have won Olympic Gold medals for New Zealand. Boardsailer, Barbara Kendall who has represented New Zealand at five Olympics, winning three medals and was one of the select group. In this edition of Sail-World we feature some excerpts from the interviews given by the medalists - all had some quite remarkable and unique stories to tell.

Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves. Many thanks to those who have contributed to this edition.

Good sailing!
