Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Only 18 Days Before the Velux 5 Oceans Race

The Sail-World Canada weekly newsletter is returning today after a short hiatus following technical challenges with our IT operations in Australia. These disruptions to normal operation were felt across the entire Tetra-Media family of marine news website.

Canadian ocean racer Derek Hatfield arrived in the Velux 5 Oceans home port of La Rochelle on Sunday morning after sailing more than 3,000 miles solo across the Atlantic. Derek's arrival marked the end of a two-week voyage from Nova Scotia, on his Eco 60 Active House during which she was battered by storms bringing wind speeds over 70 kilometers per hour. Derek commented it proved to be another good test for Active House and she performed beautifully. American Brad Van Liew also made it to La Rochelle a few days ahead of Derek on Le Pingouin, while Polish racer Zbigniew Gutkowski arrived this morning after completing his qualification passage. The rest of the racers are expected over the next few days for the race start on October 17th.

Congratulations to Canadian Paul Tingley, World Champion in the 2.4mR. Paul beat a strong fleet of over 80 racers in the World Championship held in the Netherlands last week. Bruce Millar, the only other Canadian entry finished a very respectable fourth.

A perfect fall day closed the 2010 Melges 24 North American Championship in Rochester, NY where Adam Burns from Youngstown Yacht Club, sailing USA378 Presto with co-owner and wife Lori Burns and crew James Barnash, John Goller and Jason Suitor won the event. He was joined on the podium by Alan Field of Los Angeles (USA811 WTF) in second place and Henry Filter of Annapolis (USA721 Wild Child) who secured third place. Peter Hansen (Byrr) from the Thunder Bay Yacht Club was the top Canadian entry.

On the west coast, the West Vancouver Yacht Club is hosting the Farr 30 Canadian National Championships. Andrew Hamilton (RVYC) and crew took care of business with seven bullets in ten races to win the event by a wide margin. A little further south, in San Francisco, 26-year old Luca Lalli on B-Lin Sailing (ITA 23) clinched the 2010 Melges 32 World Championship title, two points ahead of his strongest adversary John Porter on Full Throttle (USA 49). 32 boats from around the world made this the most popular Melges 32 World Championship ever; the future looks good for the class.

See you on the water!
