Sail-World New Zealand: 4 August 2010
 | | Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Skipper Ian Walker leads Green Dragon away from the Blasket Islands west of Ireland in the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race David Kneale/VOR | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 4 August 2010
In this edition we conclude the second part of the series looking at sailing and television and our discussion with Paul France, producer of the New Zealand coverage of the 1987 Louis Vuitton and America's Cups in Fremantle.
In today's commentary, we look at how sailing can maybe pull itself out of the rut that it seems to be in for broadcasting of the Olympic sailing regatta. Last place is not where anyone wants to be in TV viewing statistics, and something different clearly needs to happen.
Paul France gives his ideas in this edition.
Off Cowes, another round of America's Cup style racing is about to get underway with the 1851 Cup being contested between Britain's TeamOrigin, and BMW Oracle Racing against the backdrop of the Cowes Week Regatta.
 | | Chris Bake and crew Cameron Appleton, Jeff Brock, Matt Cassidy, Andrew Estcourt, Ben Graham, Nigel King, Rome Kirby and Chris Noble celebrate their victory. - RC 44 Valencia Cup Ignacio Baixauli /RC44 Class |
We preview the racing in this edition and will be continuing the coverage each day on www.sail-world.com
The Volvo Ocean Race received some welcome, if overdue news, with the announcement of the skipper of the Abu Dhabi team which will be a joint effort with a top British skipper. We have the details in this edition.

We have changed our submission system so that you can load images and stories in the one frame. The change is a big improvement and we have been using it ourselves for story and image compilation - very simple. One of the features of the system is that you get an automated acknowledgment when the story is put online together with a link and advice as to which world regions the story has been posted.
Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.
Good sailing!

Gladwell's Line: Lifting the the Olympic Sailing Television Game Richard Gladwell, The recent Olympic Commission Report for the International Sailing Federation painted a very unflattering picture of the televised side of the Sailing Olympics.
