Sydney Int'l Boat Show, Boating Industries Alliance, Plastiki triumph
Half way through the set up of Sydney International Boat Show, Domenic Genua, event manager reports all is to schedule and the mood is positive.
'There's an element of confidence and air of excitement. People are putting a lot of effort in to their displays. There's a beautiful array of products. This is not just another boat show to exhibitors - there's a lot of thought in the mix of products.'
The extra space - 2500m² - allocated to last minute exhibitors who didn't want to miss out and those who wanted to expand their stands, will be moved in at 1am on Thursday - just hours before the event begins. 'Everybody is hyped and volunteered to be involved,' says Genua.
'All our plans are coming together,' he continues. 'Our special guests are all eager and have walked around the venue. People are here early, pumped and excited. That makes our lives a lot easier too.'
Domenic himself says he is 'fit as a fiddle' and ready for the five days of SIBS.
He hints at a host of official announcements and extra attractions to be revealed at the Friday morning industry breakfast, featuring Jessica Watson and special appearance by Don McIntyre. There will also be a world-record attempt at the brekkie, as part of the BIA's charter to promote safe recreational boating - setting off as many as 400 inflatable life jackets. (The current world record is just 89 and held by the US!)
Have a great show, on the marina or inside. Look forward to seeing you there!
Also this week, news from around the globe, including figures that show the New Zealand superyacht industry has turned a corner and is gather momentum again after a slight downturn due to the GFC, an update on the beefed up program at the MIAA international conference next year in Melbourne, a change of dates for the Darwin Boat Show to avoid the cyclone season, a first hand account of seeing the Plastiki in Darling Harbour by cruising editor, Nancy Knudsen and welcome news of the newly formed 'Boating Industries Alliance', replacing AMIF to promote the industry's profile and issues to government.
Have a great and successful show, if you're going. And keep in touch with your news!
Jeni Bone, editor
