Sail-World New Zealand: 29 June 2010

NZ Optimist Worlds Team 2010
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 29 June 2010

America's Cup news continues to dominate, with the breaking news of an announcement, apparently made in Italy on Monday that Prada Challenge/Luna Rossa will not be participating in the 34th America's Cup. This brings to an end the saga that began in New Zealand in the buildup to the 2000 America's Cup and finished in 2007 in Valencia.

Along the way skipper Francesco de Angelis became a darling of New Zealand, and the popular Italian team always ran a close second to the home team in terms of local support.

We'll have more on this announcement in later editions of Sail-World.

According to reports published in Europe, Luna Rossa will continue to compete in the TP52/Audi MedCup circuit and, interestingly, the Louis Vuitton Trophy series.

New Zealand has a fine history of producing top sailing media people. And now, those hoping to follow that path have the opportunity to do so, with the competition announced by Golden Gate Yacht Club to find new ways of portraying the America's Cup via video coverage. There's some great prizes on offer - and win or not, it may be a great way to launch a sailing media career.

We have several stories about young New Zealand sailors in this edition, including Finn Drummond and Frankie Lardies who have been working up for the 470 World in the Netherlands in mid-July.
