Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 26 April 2010.
We have an edition packed with all the New Zealand and international news thanks to some very timely reporting by Sail-World's network of correspondents.
The 18ft Skiffs wound up their four day ANZAC regatta, with 11 boats competing - three from Australia and eight from New Zealand. One of the legends in the class, John Winning (AUS) sailing Yandoo, was a clear winner of the series, with New Zealand crews in second and third places.
Staying with fast low flying yachts, the foiling Moths staged an ANZAC regatta off Takapuna aimed at getting more people into the class and showing off the new Assassin foiling moth. Andrew Brown reports in this issue.

Further up the coasts at Marsden Cove the penultimate round in the NZ Offshore Powerboat Racing Championship was staged. In the stiff breeze there was plenty of opportunity for low flight from these awesome boats, and we feature a report and great images from Cathy Vercoe in this edition.

On the international scene, racing got away overnight at Hyeres, France in the Semaine Olympique Francais - part of the ISAF World Cup circuit. The opening day was dogged with light winds, however the Kiwis that did manage to race, got in some good placings. Of particular interest is the performance of the Womens Match Race crew really having their first outing against first division competition at this level. So far, so good, and they were unlucky not to come away winning all four matches. We have a report from the New Zealand crew in this issue, plus Jodie Bakewell-White's report from Yachting New Zealand, and other reports from the first day of racing.

On Sunday, the New Zealand Marine Industry Challenge was staged in the MRX class, with many leading New Zealand marine companies competing, along with some of the top sailors associated with those companies. The event underlines the close relationship the the Marine Industry enjoys with the racing side of the sport, and the cross-application of technology that results, giving the industry an important point of difference with others in the world. We have a report and some great images from the event in this edition.
One of our top rating stories over the weekend was the use of Oracle products aboard BMW Oracle Racing's USA-17 in the 33rd America's Cup. Although we have run stories in this vein in the past, this story from Jeff Erikson, really spells out the relationship between on the on and off board systems used by the team. Very simply, the use of Oracle products enabled the team to datamine the huge amount of information that was being recorded, and work out what was a gain, and what was not; how close the settings currently used were to optimum; and how the team could compare their current performance with that on their first day of sailing.

While the minds of some will numb, as the tsunamis of technophobia hit, any racing sailor, or coach, serious about improvement in performance needs to understand this process of analysis and the techniques involved. The days of just eyeballing performance have gone. What has replaced it is a method of analysis leading to an understanding of 'the numbers', which then gives the sailor/coach a much better feel for what the 'numbers' should be on the water - without necessarily having to see these during a race. In other words, the numbers can tune the sailing mind, much more quickly than traditional coaching methods with its endless talk, rationalising and verbalising of situations.
The 'wireless boat' is another very interesting concept, and one which is applicable to any size of boat, certainly in training, and probably in racing depending on systems used.

Fourth and fifth races of Moffat Cup - Maree and Peter Sharp win title

Maree and Peter Sharp sailing IA 22 (Idiosyncrasy) won the fourth and fifth races today at Northcote and Birkenhead Yacht Club confirming their first place overall. Grant Blewett sailing IA 69 (Gemini) confirmed his second place in the series. America's Cup: Oracle Data Mining supports crew and BMW ORACLE Racing

French Olympic Sailing Week - Josh Junior starts with a Laser bullet

Only limited racing took place on day one at French Olympic Sailing Week which started overnight in Hyeres, France. Of the New Zealand entries, only the Laser sailors and women's match racers sailed, with the RS:X, Radial, 470 and Finn fleets either kept ashore or unable to complete any races. Jessica Watson, on the home stretch of her non-stop unassisted circumnavigation, has had another knock-down as the first of several forecast systems pass. Jessica is roughly in line with Ceduna in South Australia and heading to round the most southerly tip of Tasmania. A Customs aircraft flew over just after the knock-down. What did they say?
