Sail-World New Zealand: 24 April 2010

Doosan is the current leader of the Superboat Class and will be competing at Marsden Cove today.  Cathy Vercoe LuvMyBoat.com
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 24 April 2010.

The next round of the Offshore Powerboat Championships takes place at Marsden Cove today, with a full day of action planned before the Main Event gets underway at 3.00pm.

We have the program in this edition of Sail-World, and while you are in the winterless North, make sure you check out the unique opportunity at Marsden Cove to have a section of your own, with a jetty at the bottom of the garden. Sounds like Paradise? It could yours!

Plenty of speed and action at Marsden Cove, today, 24 April starting at 1100am  Marsden Cove

Another high-speed event on this weekend is the ANZAC 18ft skiff series with 11 crews competing including three from Australia. Being sailed on the Waitemata harbour, three Australian crews are competing. The regatta started on Thursday, we have images and results in this edition.

Up the coast at Takapuna, the foiling Moths make a reappearance in New Zealand, this is not so much a racing event, but geared more at getting new sailors into the exciting singlehander, some of the name sailors in New Zealand are making the transition to the foiling Moth. So if you want to find out more, get to Takapuna and look for the action. Full details again, in this edition.

Anzac Skiffs - Day 1  Ross Whitburn

Emirates Team New Zealand's Volvo Ocean Race entry, Camper, to another step down its fast tracked program on Thursday afternoon, with the announcement of Australian Chris Nicholson as skipper, and young Kiwi match racer, Adam Minoprio as one of three under 30 crew.

We have the audio of the media conference in this edition, plus the official announcement.

Emirates Team New Zealand would have us believe that this whole effort came together in just three weeks, which if correct is absolutely remarkable. In this edition we have gone back and looked over some interviews, announcements and other comment, plus the information/rumour that gets fed through from international sources.

We do have some information, from offshore, that they were in the market a little earlier than the end of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, but certainly from what we can see there has been a remarkable sequence of events.

Kevin Shoebridge, Chris Nicholson and Adam Minoprio at the Camper/ETNZ skipper announcement  Richard Gladwell

The entry of established professional teams with their own bases, design, engineering, support and sailing teams has added a new level of interest to the next Volvo Ocean Race - and with Emirates Team New Zealand, Groupama and the expected announcement by Alinghi - the event has definitely lifted to a new level.

But as we note in the story, Emirates Team New Zealand is the only professional sailing team to be running entries in five different grand prix sailing events - and that is a truly remarkable effort in itself - let alone the level of success the team enjoys at this level of competition.

Remember, if your event PR person is not yet sending news and images to Sail-World.com, please gently point out the submit banner on the top of the news on every single page on our site.
