Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Review

It seems like the Rolex Sydney-Hobart yacht race was the only sailing event in the world this past week; possibly because they are the only ones who dare run such a major event over the Christmas holidays! As usual, the event has proven to be full of surprises; while some owners were boasting of their yachts potential to beat all previous records, and possibly run the 600+ miles course in less than 24 fours given the right conditions, Mother Nature played her cards close to her chest until the start and provided a mixture of conditions that dashed any hopes of record breaking times for 2009. While the super maxis lead the fleet to line honors, with Alfa Romeo taking the gun in Hobart after two days and nine hours. Smaller 40 foot yachts are being favored on IRC corrected time; as I write this, an unfavorable weather forecast is likely to improve the chances of all slower yachts that are still at sea. Overall winner will only be known much later, once the computer calculations have accounted for all finish times as early predictions are too risky at this point. All the Sydney-Hobart news details are available on the dedicated Sail-World site here (http://www.sail-world.com/Australia/index_n.cfm?SEid=1212)

Next on the horizon is the upcoming Ft. Lauderdale to Key West offshore race, and the Key West Race Week event. Sail-World Canada will be reporting on the success of Canadian entries!

A special note to all Canadian sailors who will be participating in winter regattas over the next few months: we encourage you to share your stories and your photos; please submit your regatta news directly to Sail-World Canada. Your pictures really make the story; include as many as you like (up to 12) and ensure your photos are at least 1280 pixels wide so they can be viewed in high resolution. You can also easily post your stories and photos directly from the Sail-World Canada website; simply click on the new big red bar in the upper right hand corner of the home page.

All the best for the New Year!
