Welcome to Sail-World.Com's New Zealand newsletter for 2 December 2009

In this edition we are breaking the story of Emirates Team New Zealand's CEO, Grant Dalton confirming that he is in discussions with the Spanish telco, Telefonica, about an involvement in the next Volvo Ocean Race.

No official announcement has yet been made, and the shape of that involvement is not disclosed. In this edition we discuss a couple of options, and are strongly led to believe that Dalton will not be severing his ties with the America's Cup racing team.

We are also carrying a story from yesterday on the seizure of a VOR60, Sail Bahrain who ventured 500metres into Iranian waters. From news reports the crew are safe and are being treated well, at this stage. Significantly the scene of the boarding is about 60 miles away from the coast of Ras al-Khaimah proposed venue for the 2010 America's Cup and about which concerns on this very type of incident were raised by the US Challenger and dismissed by regatta organisers.

We have several items of local news including an update on the Fitzroy Yachts Trans Tasman Race; the arrival of an Open 60, destined to have a serious crack at the local racing scene and she is entered in the Round Australia race; Waka Racing report on their forays into the international match racing circuit; Salthouse Marine is moving to the water; and the OK's have concluded another Pre-Worlds selection event in the build up to the World Championships in Wellington in 2010.

The America's Cup continues to percolate with a breakage aboard Alinghi 5 during sailing trials in a seaway off Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) plus there is a video from skipper Brad Butterworth on the Americas's Cup Defender, plus some very cool sailing footage. In San Diego, BMW Oracle Racing have hauled BOR90 for shipping to Valencia, plus a few modifications beforehand. We are also featuring an interview with Dirk de Ridder - aka 'Cheese' - who is the mainsail trimmer on board the BOR 90 he explains to Peter Rusch of BMWOracleRacings blogsite what it is like to switch from soft to hardsails.

Sail-World's focus shifts to the Monsoon Cup being sailed in Malaysia. Sail-World has editors at the venue, and will be following the fortunes of BlackMatch Racing who will be keen to retain their world 1 ranking for 2009, and a second New Zealand crew, Waka Racing who are on the up, and are poised to break into the top echelon of the match racing scene. The regatta is again being sailed in a fleet of Bakewell-White designs - custom built for the event.

Kiwi skippered Volvo60 seized by Iranians off America's Cup venue Richard Gladwell, Five crew members of a VOR60 have been captured and detained by Iran after their yacht strayed 500 metres into Iranian territorial waters late last week. Paul Cayard on Katusha's overall performance Dubai RC 44 Gold Cup Paul Cayard, For the last race, we had a good start, actually all of our starts were good all week and that is a credit to Bob Little and Morgan Gutenkunst. We were battling away in 5th most of the race and then we passed Aqua down the final run to finish 4th in the last one. It was not our best regatta that is for sure.
