Sail-World New Zealand: 13 November 2009

Plenty of action and enthusiasm at Marsden Cove for the Northland Boat Show  Marsden Cove
Welcome Sail-World.Com's New Zealand newsletter for 13 November 2009

There's bit of something for everyone in this issue.

If you are into extreme sailing, then see the story and pictures of the French foiler l'Hydroptere as she makes a sets yet another World Speed record mark of over 50kts for the measured mile. Bear in mind that is an average speed sustained for a very long distance.

And you'll probably need to look at the still images and couple of videos of BOR90 sailing off San Diego with her new wing mast. This craft is an awesome sight, and a marvel of sailing technology. They had a bit of a glitch today - we've got that story too.

Staying with the speed freaks, we have daily reports and video from Franck Cammas and friends as they make a very serious attempt aboard Groupama on the round the world speed record, otherwise known as the Jules Verne Trophy. there's some great onboard video as they skip along at over 30 kts with all the nonchalance of being on a harbour cruise.

For the match racers, we are covering the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta at Nice Cote d'Azur, France, where Emirates Team New Zealand is giving the other competitors a sailing lesson, with the crew's teamwork being a telling factor. ONE Sport's Martin Tasker reports from the Series to give an inside perspective.

The live coverage of the event, using Virtual Eye, continues to set new standards from a team led by the highly experienced NZ producer Denis Harvey and a team of Kiwis and Europeans contracted to WSTA.

A young New Zealand crew, WAKA Racing has won their way through the Asian Match Racing Championships, and is now qualified for the Monsoon Cup. we have their reports from the regatta.

  RNZYS Media

And of course on the local front we have daily report from the Telecom New Zealand Match Racing Championships being conducted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. There's been some shock results in that series, and the outcome this weekend will be watched with great interest.

Staying with the local scene we preview the Auckland Championships for the 18ft skiffs which get underway off Orakei on Sunday and continue for the two days of the following weekend. A seven boat fleet will provide some spectacular racing.

If you are looking west of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the weekend, those yachts racing out there are the Etchells class getting in a National Championship while there is still some of 2009 left on the calendar. The class has made a big effort to get established at Westhaven - with the hoist available, and the 12 yachts competing in the Nationals, this weekend, is a great reward for all that hard work.

If you missed the Northland Boat Show, staged at Marsden Cove, last weekend, don't worry, We have a great report on the show, plus plenty of pictures. By all accounts it was a tremendous success, and there's some very interesting conclusions being drawn about the state of the marine industry and boating market -which looks to be coming out of the recession.

There's more good news for the marine industry, with the announcement by Events Clothing regarding their acquisition of the international distribution rights (outside Australia and New Zealand) for the iconic Line 7 range.

And if you have lost the plot on America's Cup Legal, we've got the update on some of the developments on that front, and with a lot more on file, which we hope to be able to let go before too long. Brad Butterworth, skipper of Alinghi gives his view of the state of play, as well.

For updates on all these events and more, keep a regular check on our website www.sail-world.com.

Good sailing!
