Sail-World USA: 9 October 2009

BlackMatch trailing Ben Ainslie - Argo Bermuda Gold Cup, 2009  World Match Racing Tour ©
Welcome Sail-World.Com's US newsletter for 9 October 2009

US Olympic Gold medalist, and Rolex World sailor of the Year nominee, Anna Tunnicliffe is showing the way after the first day of the Rolex International Womens Keelboat Championship in Rochester NY. We have a full report in this issue.

In South Africa the Vestas Sail Rocket has kited during a speed record attempt - we have some pictures in this issue along with a video of recent events as they chase the 51kt plus speed record set by the French hydrofoiler l'Hydroptere a few weeks ago.

Britain's sailing superstar, Ben Ainslie is the first through to the Quarterfinals at the Argo Group Gold Cup sailed in Bermuda. However as will all the World Match Racing Tour events it is still early days and frequently the tables get upset in the final plays. We have reports on the event thus far, plus we'll be carrying updates over the weekend on www.sail-world.com

USA's Quantum Racing is having a hard time of it in the World Championships for the TP52 class in Palma. As would be expected the racing is close - although she is lying in third overall after two days racing, Quantum Racing is just one point off the lead, and the top three boats have got a small jump on the rest of the fleet. Again stay tuned to www.sail-world.com for updates over the weekend.

Staying with TP52's a special launching took place in Auckland, NZ, yesterday afternoon with the splashing of Jim Farmer's new ILC52 Georgia Racing. She is special for a couple of reasons. Firstly she is a child of the recession, where Farmer was able to get some very good prices from builders and suppliers - making the project viable. She is taken off the hull mould off Emirates Team New Zealand's TP52, NZL-380, with the internal ballast being removed and the weight substituted with a cruising interior, and without the canting keel common on yachts this size. We have a report and photos in this issue.

For America's Cup addicts, no real developments, that we can report, but there is plenty going on beneath the surface. There may be some more news over the weekend however a Judicial Conference was held today, in New York, with both side emerging with their usual widely differing version of what transpired. No official releases out yet - if indeed, they will be issued. The next formal Hearing is set down for 27 October, with the Notice of Race due to be issued on 6 November.

There was an exchange of letters this afternoon between the two clubs, Societe Nautique de Geneve and Golden Gate Yacht Club. We have both texts in this issue. They are self explanatory, with an ultimatum being given by Ras al-Khaimah - which was tossed straight back by the San Franciscans. But read for yourself, in this edition.

Many thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!
