The forthcoming Asia Superyacht Conference (Singapore, 13-14 October) is something very much overdue and very much to be welcomed. The past few years there's so been so much pr fluff and blather about how Asia is about to become the waterbed playground of the yachting super-wealthy (both power and sail) that it's about time a few home truths were aired. Let's start with finding out exactly how many of the new marinas we keep hearing about are operational - really operational - what sort of boats can get into them, and what services they can offer. There's a lot of lip-service paid to the development of boating facilities in Asia, but it often stops there. Maybe someone could apprise a few government officials of the amounts of money that tend to follow Big Boats around - lots - that'd make the authorities wake up a bit!
