Sail-World USA: 21 August 2009

505 North American Championships - Day 3  Erik Simonson/MarineMediaAlliance.com
Welcome Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 21 August 2009

The 505 North American Championships have concluded at the St Francis YC, San Francisco, with a win for Mike Martin and Jeff Nelson. US crews filled the top three places overall with the top 'foreigner' and current World Champion, Britain's Ian Pinnell and Carl Gibbon finishing in fourth place.

The SAP sponsored World Championship begins on Sunday 23rd August.

In this issue we continue our coverage of the Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week.

The Sail-World team has been on site all regatta, enduring the rugged Queensland conditions, and starting at 3.00am to bring you daily previews and reviews of the racing. PredictWind.com have been doing a great job keeping the fleet updated with the latest weather prognosis. Signed up for your free 30day trial yet?

We continue our look at the America's Cup multihulls in this issue with an image gallery of BMW Oracle Racing's BOR90/USA doing some speed trialling off the San Diego coast, at what looks to be full noise.

The speed of the giant multihull is fairly apparent, always raising the question of just how hard was it blowing? The only way to really judge is to dig out the Beaufort scale and their descriptions of sea description for a given windstrength and then try and relate that to the images.

Assuming the BMW Oracle's intrepid photographer, Gilles Martin-Raget, hasn't been Photoshopping, the sea states, we can see that there aren't too many whitecaps - in fact the breeze looks to be in the 8-10kts range. Our guess is the BOR90 is hitting 25-30kts in these conditions which is consistent with multiples of wind speed that have been talked of by those who have seen BOR90 sailing with the hand-brake off.

One change that would seem to be likely is that the grinder team may be replaced with a BMW engine to drive the winches. If you look closely at the images of the grinder platforms and the height these guys are expected to work off the water, maybe they would be keen to step off The Beast - but somehow we doubt they would give up this buzz for anything.

Golden Gate YC's legal team appears to be warming up on the sidelines, with the addition of David Boies, recently retained by Team New Zealand in their action against Team Alinghi and Ernesto Bertarelli over undertakings made to secure Team New Zealand's entry in late July 2007 for then then 33rd America's Cup. WE tell you what we think GGYC are up to, in this issue.

Meanwhile overall series leader Emirates Team New Zealand has been back in action in Portiamo, Portugal in the fourth round of the Audi MedCup. While they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory in the opening stanzas, they now are joint leaders in the regatta.

Defending champion Quantum Racing (USA) came out firing on all cylinders, and led on the opening day, but slipped back on the points table after a poor opening race.

Follow the daily action on www.sail-world.com.

Good sailing!
