Sail-World USA: 26 July 2009
 | | Mark rounding action at the US Optimist Nationals 2009 Rich Roberts © | Welcome Sail-World.Com's NZ newsletter for 26 July 2009
Off Cagliari, Sardinia, Emirates Team NZ's TP52 NZL380 has not quite had it all her way in the third round of the Audi MedCup, however in the shifty winds overnight, the New Zealanders managed to extend their lead in the event, and have won the event.
US entry, and defending champions Quantum Rcing (Terry Hutchison) has had a mixed regatta placing seventh for this event and dropping down to third on the points table for the MedCup.

In this edition we feature many image galleries of the event, including one by top Swiss sailing photographer Juerg Kaufmann of go4image.com Juerg has developed a unique style of photography, and submitted 20 images to Sail-World taken in the Coastal Race of the MedCup. We present all of these in two galleries click here and here to see his outstanding work/art. And don't forget to click on the expand image option in the caption of the shot to see these images in full screen - they really light up.
Another top international photographer, Chris Cameron has also provided galleries of images of the Audi MedCup series. See the latest of his galleries by clicking here

In this edition we analyze the last race on Day 4 of the MedCup, Race 8, using Animation Research Ltd's Virtual Eye. In Race 8, Bigamist 7 (POR) was recalled at the start, recrossed 158 metres behind, dropped back further to 177 metres further up the beat, and then staged an amazing recovery (or 'jammed' a big shift on the starboard layline) to take the lead just short of the top mark, eventually rounding in second place, and then went on to take the race. This isn't a sequence those Optimist sailors trying to cure themselves of 'corner banging' should view!
 | | Virtual Eye shows Bigamist 7 being chased to the finish of Race 8 in the Audi MedCup ARL Media |
Sail-World has been using Virtual Eye for the analysis, reporting and images of the the Audi Med Cup and previously the Louis Vuitton Cup, using a version which runs on a laptop. It is the most amazing tool for media and fans that we have seen and used. Virtual Eye will transform the way sailing can be viewed and covered. While there are other tracking and graphics systems, the ones we have seen do not stand any comparison with Virtual Eye which is just the most stunning product. How yachting administrators and event organizers can spend hours pondering how to improve the coverage and following of the sport, and don't have Virtual Eye involved in their event, is beyond the comprehension of this scribe.

On Italy's Lake Garda, two USA crews have finished in the top ten in the 29er World Championship, with another in 17th overall. 186 crews from 20 countries contested the regatta. The 29er is an open class in the ISAF Youth Worlds from next year. We have featured daily reports from the 29ers in this issue.
In Cabrillo, CA, the US Optimist Championships are in their final day, today. Defending champion Christopher Williford (Fla) is not having an easy time of it. Catch Rich Roberts' reports and images in this edition.
We are also carrying reports on two match racing clinics conducted by current national champion, Dave Perry, in New York and Wisconsin. By all accounts they have both been a huge success, with the New York event attracting six teams and the other, a youth match racing camp drawing teams from Maine, California and US Virgin Islands.
Good sailing!
