Neville Crichton - smashes the race record in Transpac 2009

Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 11 July 2009.

In this newsletter we wrap up the Finn Gold Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark and the Star Europeans in Kiel, along with coverage from the opening day of the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in Brazil.

In the Finn Gold Cup, USA's 2008 Olympic Silver medalist Zach Railey finished on the medal winners' podium. In the Star Eupoeans, the two marks, earned a top ten placing for the USA.

In both events US sailors had their moments, leading the regatta, which is a creditable enough result. However both indicate that there is more work to be done.

Morgan Kiss and Laura McKenna are the best places US crew in the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds being sailed in Brazil. They are lying fifth overall aftera day that started in a good breeze and faded sadly in the second race - which worked to the benefit of the US crew who scored third place.

The Transpac is over with Neville Crichton taking a cutlass to the race record. The New Zealand born car dealer worked in Hawaii for five years in the late 1970's and this was his first Transpac in 30years. Crichton certainly made his return felt. We have a full report and interview in this issue.

On another extreme of sailing, we have more images from the pre-launch and rigging of Alinghi 5. Certainly these are eye-candy for anyone interested in the development and application of sailing technology. Full marks to Alinghi for letting fans and photographers so close to their America's Cup Defender, at this stage of the contest.

Team Aqua wins DHL Coastal Race at Malcesine RC 44 Cup RC 44 Cup media, The RC 44 Cup DHL coastal race took place early this morning and was definitely the highlight of the event so far. Indeed, the regatta took place in the best conditions Lake Garda can offer, with 20 knots of wind and a stunning sunshine. U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship winners crowned Jake Fish, The U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship was cancelled today due to insufficient winds. Consistency was the key to success for the new champions. Their worst finish was fifth in race one on Thursday. Hardesty, Strauss and Young win 2009 Dragon Edinburgh Cup Fiona Brown, The finish of the Dragon Edinburgh Cup, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, could not have been more gripping as a first mark pile up in today's final race threw the fleet and the results into disaray. Day One Of 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship ISAF Media, After two races completed across all seven events, experience is the common denominator amongst the leading crews, with the top standings all dominated by teams who featured at the championship in Århus last year. US Sailing Team's Zach Railey wins Silver at Finn World Championship Marlieke Eaton, Less than a year after winning a silver medal at the Olympic Games – and after having taken most of that time off from sailing - US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics member Zach Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) has proven that he is still on top of his game. Finn Gold Cup drama -Zach Railey (USA) leads fleet to medal race Robert Deaves, American Zach Railey returned to the top of the leader board after a tough day at the Finn Gold Cup in Vallensbaek, Denmark. After leading the first race on Friday from start to finish, he placed seventh in race 10 to go in into Saturday's medal race with a narrow three point lead over Jonas Høgh Christensen (DEN).
