Sail-World USA - 7 July 2009

Bryan Boyd (USA) winner of race 1 at 2009 Finn Gold Cup  Tosca Zambra
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 7 July 2009.

Major news over the weekend was the unveiling of the 33rd America's Cup Defender, Alinghi 5, in Villeneuve, Switzerland.

This unveiling process took place piece by piece with the demolition of the building shed, until the catamaran was revealed.

From here there will be a major logistics exercise to get her to Lake Geneva, with a helicopter lift to take place on Wednesday. There she will be rigged and trialled. We understand the trip to the sea will not be straightforward, with a number of options being considered - all with varying degrees of difficulty for the landlocked Swiss.

Yesterday, BMW Oracle Racing launched a revamped and modified BOR90. It is believed that a second yacht, USA, is under construction.

As to who is the faster - that will not be known until 8 February - assuming both monsters get through their trialling and testing phase unscathed. The smart money is that given platform flex can be controlled, the lightest will win.

In the next day, we will be featuring an analysis from a leading US multihull designer and builder on some of the key points of Alinghi 5, and the issues that lie ahead in the sea trials and then in the racing. Stay tuned to our website www.sail-world.com/usa for this story.

In this issue we have featured images of both multihulls. We had hoped to bring you images from the 'lift-off' off Alinghi 5 for the short trip to Lake Geneva, however that was postponed due to inclement weather.

Certainly this is a display of sailing technology of the likes that have never been seen before, and the performance of these two fine yachts will be watched with a great degree of interest and fascination.

Off California, the Transpac 09 is now fully underway with the last two divisions starting on Sunday. Alfa Romeo (Neville Crichton) cleared out at the start and few would be betting against her for line ho nours. At the time of writing she had set a new 24hrs record for the Transpac of a litte under 400nm.

We also have reports form Europe on both the Star Europeans being sailed in Kiel and the Finn Gold Cup in Copenhagen

Enjoy!

Good sailing!
