US crews have taken two Gold and one Bronze medals in the fifth event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup sailed as part of Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) Germany.

These are great results for Paige Railey and Anna Tunnicliffe in the Laser Radial class and Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube in the Star class. USA has taken ownership of the laser radial event with Railey and Tunnicliffe winning all five ISAF World Sailing Cup events sailed so far this year. Currently the Gold medal count is stacked 3-2 in Tunncliffe's favor - so it will be game on for the final event in Weymouth at the Skandia Go for Gold Regatta, the final event in the new league.

In this edition we have full reports and images from most of the racing - given the regatta was plagued with light winds, meaning that in some classes only five races were able to be sailed.

The Volvo Ocean Race has started from Stockholm for the final 400nm leg to St Petersburg, Russia. The leg must finish on Saturday to meet a date with a couple of bridges, which will be raised to allow the fleet into the historic city.

US entry Puma Racing has made an excellent start, leading the fleet around the first mark. The Russian entry tried to re-join the fleet for the final leg, but failed to meet the organizers safety requirements and instead started late and will accompany the fleet to their home port.

There seems to be some movement in the America's Cup scene after no news for three weeks or so.

In this issue we have set out what Sail-World understands to be the current situation with the extension of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series into an event we have entitled the Louis Vuitton World Series.

The new event is a combination of the Acts sponsored by Louis Vuitton that preceded the 2007 America's Cup, the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and the global Volvo Ocean Race. In effect it is an attempt to turn the America's Cup into a truly global event, rather than a port/city venue centric event.

As one long time player, very close to the action described the concept to us (off the record, of course) as being 'the most exciting development that we are likely to see in our lifetimes'. The Multihill Match provides and opportunity for the America's Cup to be re-shaped without variation to the Deed of Gift, creating a super event which would be unique in sailing and in deed in world sport generally.

There would seem to be drums beating on other matters associated with the 33rd (Multihull) Match. We are checking this information before publishing, and will feature and update on www.sail-world.com as soon as we have undertaken this process.

Suffice to say the Louis Vuitton World Series project is very ambitious, but in our view is now necessary to ensure the survival of the America's Cup teams. One headline described the recent contretemps within Formula 1 as 'America's Cup on Wheels'. That headline stayed valid for a couple of days before the wiser heads involved in Formula 1 were able to engineer a solution and steer their event away from the abyss.

it is interesting to see the title of what should the the shop-window event for sailing used in this context and the phrase 'America's Cup' would now seem to be a byline in the general media for a once successful event self-igniting on a pyre of self-interest, posturing and litigation.

In these dark days, the Louis Vuitton events shine like a powerful beacon

Barking Mad leads after day two of Rolex Farr 40 Worlds KPMS, On day two at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds 2009 three boats held their nerve. Today was all about keeping your head at the start line.
