Sail-World USA - 17 June 2009
 | | PUMA Ocean Racing win Leg 9 of the Volvo Ocean Race into Sandhamn Island, Stockholm Volvo Ocean Race/Sally Collision | Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 17 June 2009.
Ericsson 4 has won the Volvo Ocean Race, with a leg and an In-Port race to spare. Barring a major mishap, the US entry Puma Racing skippered by Ken Read will take second overall. Both are outstanding achievements in the grueling event, where Consistency is King, and if you are brilliant too boot, so much the better.
Ericsson 4's campaign was definitely in the latter category, and her international crew led by Torben Grael, winner of five Olympic medals, sailed sublimely.
Hats off too, to Ken Read and his team aboard Puma Racing. They too were consistent - only winning one of the nine legs sailed to date. At this stage they are 9pts ahead of Telefonica Blue with 12pts on the table.

In this issue we update on the Telefonica Blue rescue and revival, she is now due to re-enter the water on Thursday morning. She will attempt to complete the leg, having suspended racing, and intends to sail in the In-Port race on Saturday. The final leg starts the following Saturday (27 June) and is a 400nm 'sprint' to St Petersburg, Russia.
 | | Telefonica shore crews work around the clock to fix the damage sustained when they ran aground at the start of leg 9 Maria Muina/Equipo Telefonica |
Yesterday on www.sail-world.com we posted a gallery of images taken at Telefonica Blue's time of impact and later haul-out and repairs, along with two video clips of the incident (including on board footage). Sorry there is no prize for counting the number of times 'Sci-Fi' Telefonica Blue's navigator says 'sorry', however the incident does underline the inherent danger of using a GPS position superimposed over digital charts when rock-hopping, while racing or cruising.
The Class Breaks for the Transpac Race have been published. Click here to review.
 | | Autonet Mobile Melges 24 US Nationals-San Francisco Chuck Lantz |
Another highlight of this edition are two photo galleries from Chuck Lantz from the Melges 32 Nationals in San Francisco. While we are getting used to seeing beautiful images taken from a carefully positioned media boat, due to the fact that he is on crutches awaing a hip operation, Chuck apologises for only being able to shot from the breakwater. they are excellent shots nevertheless.
