Sail-World USA - 15 June 2009

Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 15 June 2009.

Plenty of drama over the weekend from Sweden and Marseilles. Leg 9 of the Volvo Ocean Race got underway to a fast start off Marstrand, Sweden yesterday. While leading the eight boat fleet, Telefonica Blue mounted a rock while sailing at 14kts and has sustained serious damage. Tthe incident looks potentially the second successive early exit for skipper Bouwe Bekking (NED), after Movistar sunk in the previous Volvo Ocean Race.

In this edition we have presented a gallery of shots of the start and a second gallery on the Telefonica Blue 'terrain closure' incident, taken from a helicopter at the scene and some dramatic images from below decks, with pumps running hard to cope with the inflow of water. There's also on-board video taken at the moment of impact.

Puma Racing's Ken Read (USA) was just ten boat lengths behind Telefonica Blue and provided a first hand account of the incident. We also have charts of the area which give some understanding as to why this most unfortunate incident happened.

Before the start of the leg, Puma Racing and Telefonica Blue were just 1pt apart on the points table for the race. The incident with Telefonica Blue should assure Puma Racing of second place overall, barring mishaps.

USA's Quantum Racing, skippered Terry Hutchinson had a herculean task to unseat Emirates Team NZ at the top of the points table in the Audi MedCup. Best option for the US team was to control the damage, and to try and minimize the Kiiw's lead - trimming a couple of points of it on the final day.

As we noted last week, Synergy, the former USA-17 out of BMW Oracle Racing is proving to be a bit of a dark horse scoring a win and a second on the penultimate day of the regatta.

As part of our coverage of this event, Sail-World has been provided with a viewer from Animation Research to develop images of key incidents from the Audi MedCup, using ARL's Virtual Eye technology.

Matador leads Quantum Racing around the leeward mark in the final race of the Audi MedCup with Emirates Team NZ back in the fleet.  ARL Media

What we have lacked are incidents to test out the system. However this drought ended in Races 8 and 9 with plenty of action from both races. In this issue, we have presented a gallery and narrative of the key incidents - and there are a few we have left out. This application from ARL is absolutely stunning and will revolutionize the coverage of sailing on the web.

When viewing don't forget to click on the 'enlarge image' function to see the detail in full screen. Take a look at the ARL website www.arl.co.nz to see some more examples of how their outstanding graphics have been used as an integral part of media coverage of other sports. You'll be surprised.

Sail-World will be providing further galleries and incident explanations during the week.

Autonet Mobile Melges 24 US Nationals-San Francisco)   Chuck Lantz

The US Melges 24 Nationals went into a three way tie for first place. In this issue we report on how the regatta panned out in San Francisco, along with some great images from Chuck Lantz..

History has been made at Long Beach, with Sally Barkow winning the Ficker Cup and becoming the first woman to qualify for the Congressional Cup, beating double winner of the Con Cup, Dave Perry. Rich Roberts reports in this issue, with the usual supply of some great images.

Rich Roberts also brings us reports and images from the Hoag Cup, sailed out of Balboa YC. And from the East Coast catch Bobby MacGowan's report on the New York YC's 155th Annual Regatta.

Plus there's plenty more great USA and international sailing news in this issue.

Enjoy!

Good sailing!
