Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 8 June 2009.

This edition is focused very much on extreme sailing.

If you want to see images of Volvo 70's sailing at 30kts plus - we have it!

If you want to see images of a foiling yacht with three crew setting a course record - we have it!

If you want to see images from the Audi Melges 32 series, sailing in big winds in Scarlino, Italy - we have it!

If you want to read about Alinghi's win , over the weekend - we have it!

And that's just the start of some great stories and outstanding images that we are pleased to bring you in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter.

If match racing is your taste, then we have reports and images from the the Korea Match Cup. There was no quarter given in the cut-throat racing using the Korea Match 36's designed by Bakewell-White Yacht Design.

Annie Gardner Nelson, SDYC, (l) met her goals for the event... beating Chris Nesbitt at least once, and to finish second in the Butler Cup   Rick Roberts ©

Closer to home, the Butler Cup was sailed off Long Beach YC. The event is a match race training platform, and the skippers and their teams had the benefit of clinics, de-briefs and on-the-water coaching from Dave Perry, two-time Congressional Cup winner. The series winner goes on to compete in the Ficker Cup, next weekend.

In Scarlino, Italy, New Yorker, Pieter Taselaar, with Nathan Wilmot (AUS) as tactician has taken the Audi Melges 32 series. Second overall was Team 93 with USA's Jonathan Mckee calling tactics.

As you may have guessed the Volvo Ocean Race started Leg 8 on Saturday afternoon, local time, with some strong winds to propel the seven strong fleet on the next 'sprint' leg of just 1250nm. At latest report, with 700nm left to sail, just 12nm covers the fleet. We will be updating regularly on www.sail-world.com and look forward to many great images being sent back from what many describe as a 'coastal race' - meaning that helicopter rides out to the race fleet, with some of the world's top photographers aboard are expected.

Rick Tomlinson caught the fleet off the coast of Ireland in the middle of a 38kt squall, which caught the fleet with their big gear on - and no option but to ride it out. And what a ride it was, as you can see from the two galleries of images in this issue.

When looking at these image galleries on Sail-World, don't forget to click on the 'Enlarge Image' feature that is available on some images - this will expand the image to fill your screen for around 20 secs - they are spectacular!
