Ericsson 4 skipper, Torben Grael (BRA), (pictured) looks set to add Volvo OR laurels to his Olympic medal collection and America's Cup achievements.   Rick Tomlinson/Volvo Ocean Race ©
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 25 May 2009.

Today's edition is dominated with news from the Volvo Ocean Race finish in Galway Bay. As we predicted using the latest projections from PredictWind and Expedition, Ericsson 4 took Leg 7, and possibly the Volvo Ocean Race. She leads by a 14.5pt margin.

This crew is led by the amazing Torben Grael, who looks set to add Volvo Ocean Race laurels to his collection of Olympic medals, and three America's Cup campaigns, as tactician, with Prada/Luna Rossa.

There were some real upsets in the final stages of the race, resulting in changes to the podium placings.

PUMA Ocean Racing, skippered by Ken Read (USA) finish second on leg 7 from Boston to Galway,   Sally Collison/PUMA Ocean Racing

Most notable of these was US entry, PUMA Racing (Ken Read) had an outstanding final 1,000nm breaking her rudder, stopping to fit a replacement, and then working her Stealth Play perfectly to lift onto a podium position. Green Dragon the Irish/Chinese entry was another big mover in the final stages of Leg 7.

In this issue we have full coverage of the finish in the Emerald Isle. From here, the race will now wind its way through Europe to finish in Russia. But once again the Volvo Ocean Race, has virtually finished in England with the overall leader in an almost unbeatable position with three legs, plus in-port racing still to be contested.

Telefonica Blackreaches into Galway in winds of 25kts on Leg 7  Airman Dermot Molloy 105 Sqn/Irish Air Corps

Letter writing continues to be a favourite occupation of those the running the America's Cup scene, at present.

In this issue we feature a couple more, as the protagonists descend further into the bear-pit, and we look at some of the outcomes. As in 1988, there is a lot of posturing and positioning underway as the PR and legal teams try to run interference on the other's campaign.
