Sail-World USA - 16 May 2009

The Skippers Press Conference in Boston

  Dave Kneale/Volvo Ocean Race ©
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 16 May 2009.

In a few hours, Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race gets underway from Boston, heading for Galway, Ireland. We'll bring you full coverafe on our website www.sail-world.com.

On Thursday the New York Supreme Court ruled on the Contempt of Court issue, and also the question of just when BMW Oracle Racing had to supply their Customs-House Registry documents.

Justice Kornreich seemed to some observers to have come in with a decision already in her head, and was just testing the parties on that.

Surprisingly, she ruled from the bench, without the usual reserved decision. We have reaction of the parties in this issue.

One twist, was that Justice Kornreich tried to set up a mediation process between the parties. Whether this will fly remains an interesting issue. Top of the list of mediators she suggested was Justice Herman Cahn, who had heard the numerous previous motions in the NY Supreme Court on this vexed matters.

In Europe, the second race of the Audi MedCup, spluttered and spluttered in light winds. The breeze appeared for the third day of racing+ when officials were able to get three races away.

We have featured coverage of each day's racing so far, and have set up a special event on the Sail-World website to consolidate the coverage of this 60 race event.

As part of our coverage we are pleased to have secured access to the Animation Research graphics package, Virtual Eye, as used in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series.

In another world first we are able to bring you images from the Audi MedCup series from Virtual Eye - the significance this time being that it is of fleet racing rather than just two-boat match racing. The Virtual Eye product is quite outstanding and it is a real credit to ARL that they have got it working to this level, (of being able to supply a viewer for remote media) so early in the regatta.

We hope that this application will greatly enhance our coverage, both in terms of being able to tell the story of the race, and to produce images of critical incidents.

Don't forget if you have news of your class, event , or regatta you can get in touch with Sail-World's readership of 125,000 unique viewers per month. Around 10,000 people per day read our website. This facility is yours - for free. We're delighted if you use use it, because we want to promote US sailing and US sailors. And yes, we're more than happy to give your sponsors a mention, because without them a lot of what does take place, wouldn't.

Just click on the link below and you will hook straight into our database, and get your news to the sailing world.

Good sailing!
