Sail-World USA - 11 May 2009

Ernesto Bertarelli (Alinghi SUI1) celebrates their victory at the Grand Prix Corum  Schmid Chris/Alinghi
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 11 May 2009.

Plenty of news from around the international and US sailing scenes in today's issue.

The Main Event over the weekend was the running of the In Port Races for the Volvo Ocean Race - as is the tradition for this edition of the round the world race.

It was not a good day for Puma Racing who have been on the podium in all In-Port races to date.

In this edition we feature a report on the day's racing and a couple of image galleries of the action.

In Geneva, the first of the regattas in the D35 catamaran has been staged with Ernesto Bertarelli helming to a good win against a very classy fleet. A second D35 from Alinghi, helmed by Ed Baird and with Brad Butterworth, as tactician, also competed.

Off Alicante, Emirates Team NZ have had their first work-up in the TP52's, along with the other New Zealand built and outfitted TP52, Artemis for a Swedish owner. Both yachts were built by Cookson Boats and carry rigs from Southern Spars and with sails from North Sails NZ.

On Sunday morning, Peter Montgomery featured a 'conversation' with Russell Coutts on New Zealand's top rating SportsWorld programme. We have edited version of that program or you can hear the whole show by clicking here and running forward through the audio file. The conversation covers a range of topics, including a look behind the scenes on the America's Cup negotiations, sailing the BOR90 multihull, and the 25th anniversary of Coutts' Gold medal win Long Beach in 1984. It's a great piece of radio, and full marks to PJ Montgomery for getting this scoop.
