Welcome to Sail-World.Com's NZ newsletter for 13 March 2009

Life is getting interesting in the Volvo Ocean race as the fleet hits a patch of lighter air with about five days left until they reach Cape Horn. In this issue we have featured some projections using wind data from PredictWind and course optimisation from Expedition.

While Ericsson 3 will struggle for a day or so, she should get across the front of the fleet, but then things get interesting. Click here to see the images - you'll need to go to the large view to see the detail and the relationship between the fleet and the effect of the increased wind.

This is an interesting study for those who want to understand how course optimisation works and the challenges and decisions faced by the on board navigators who are using the same software as we have used to generate these graphics.

On the local scene, Yachting New Zealand have announced the NZL Yachting Trust ISAF Youth Worlds team

A week ago we published a photo gallery of top local boardsailor, and now Kitesailor, David Robertson flying high in strong onshore winds that prevailed for a day or so. We have updated this gallery with the addition of some video posted on YouTube - edited by Tim Scullin. It is a spectacular piece of sailing - and you can see that our images didn't lie!

On the subject of match racing, and Womens Match Racing in particular, and especially the new Olympic event, it would seem that all is far from rosy. Read Andy Rice's interview with British Olympic Yachting Manager, Stephen Park to get his very frank views on the situation.
