Sail-World New Zealand: 9 March 2009

Emirates Team NZ, the TP 52 returns home after a training sail in winds of up to 40kts today.   Richard Gladwell
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's NZ newsletter for 9 March 2009

Two state of the art TP52's from different design stables, but built and supplied by three leading NZ marine organisations will become a common sight on the Hauraki Gulf over the coming weeks.

Emirates Team New Zealand launched their TP52 over a week ago. Tomorrow the second, Artemis, for a Swedish owner will be launched and the two will work up together until the end of March.

Although Cookson Boats have built 10 of the TP52 class, they have not sailed seriously in Auckland, however that is about to change as the two train together, over the next few weeks.

Will Russell Coutts become Sir Russell Coutts? We don't know either, but under a change to the New Zealand Honours system announced yesterday, Coutts as one of the recipients of an honour deemed to be the equivalent of a Knighthood will have the option (along with the other 85 recipients over the last nine years) to take the title of 'Sir'.

If so, he will become only the second New Zealand yacht racing knight, after Sir Peter Blake, although others such as Sir Michael Fay and Sir Tom Clark have been knighted for services to sailing and their contributions to New Zealand's sailing campaigns.
