The Volvo "fleet" (all three of them in the first instance) are away on the longest lag of any VOR to date – 12,500 nm to Rio via Cape Horn, and straight after the boats have taken a major bashing and had only a short stopover in which to make repairs. Is this another Demolition Derby in the making, but this time a great deal further from land? Let's hope not.

Sam Davies has arrived back safely in Les Sables d'Olonnes in 3rd place at the end of the Vendee Globe. And she did it with style, seamanship and steady sailing – no over-wrought emotions, hysteria and crying-to-camera for this girl. Brilliant. Well done. Congratulations.

And congratulations also to Emirates Team New Zealand who comprehensively spanked Alighi in the final of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Challenge. Who said AC yachts can't race in 30kts of breeze? – yes they can, and yes they did. Great pics from Lorimer Crosbie, below.

The weather has turned nasty in Hong Kong – cold, grey, foggy, claggy and generally unpleasant. So it must be time to race to the Philippines! The biennial San Fernando Race starts on 08 April, and there's still time to lodge an entry for this trip to “fun in the sun” (www.rhkyc.org.hk).

Valentine's fleet away to Boracay
AsianYachting.com,
Last night's reception at the Lexus headquarters was one of the best race briefings this humble scribe has ever attended - five minutes of race briefing and four hours of wine and dining is just what the doctor ordered. Concern about the newly formed Tropical Depression Bising off the eastern Siargao and Biliran Islands were put to bed as it dissipated due to terrain interaction upon crossing the... [more]

Louis Vuitton Pacific Series from Finals R- Crosbie Lorimer images
Crosbie Lorimer images,
One-Nil to Alinghi after Day 1 of the Finals. In a breeze building gradually to 25 knots Alinghi gained a small lead over Team New Zealand at the start and stretched it from there. Compounding the problem for Team New Zealand was the rapid descent of their spinnaker on Leg 2. Not only did the jammer give way but the cleat behind it let the kite halyard slide and take the turns off the dru... [more]
