Editorial: America's Cup sailing action, at last!

Patrizio Betelli (Luna Rossa) watches racing on Day 2 - Desafio Trophy  Valenciasailing.com
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's New Zealand newsletter for 9 November 2008

In the America's Cup, there is action on several fronts.

For the first time in 15 months there is racing being conducted in America's Cup class yachts, aside from the racing charters that operate daily on the Waitemata harbour.

In Valencia, the first races have taken place in the Desafio Trophy, with Origin and Alinghi being tied for first place after the first day of racing. Alinghi came back into their America's Cup wining form on the second day, taking two wins and the lead. We have reports and images from this event, and will continue coverage tomorrow on our website www.sail-world.com

Four teams are racing - Alinghi, Desafio Espanol Team Origin and Luna Rossa. Great to see some of the old names and faces back on the America's Cup scene, including Patrizio Bertelli (Luna Rossa) who was a spectator from the team tender.

Thee of these teams have entered the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series - Luna Rossa, Alinghi and Team Origin. We have re-run the original story on the entries for this series, along with some new images of the entry announcement at a function this week at the New Zealand Embassy, in Paris.

In San Diego, BMW Oracle Racing, the US Challenger is continuing to sea trial the BOR90, and has been reviewed by Mr America's Cup, Dennis Conner. We have featured his comments in a report from the International Herald Tribune.

We also feature an interview with Russell Coutts, skipper of BMW Oracle Racing on his thoughts on the upcoming Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and their standing counter offer to the holders of the America's Cup, to get that event back on the road again.

In Madrid, the ISAF Conference gets underway this weekend with some key issues on the table. We have featured the ISAF view of which issues are of significance. For many outside the the ISAF inner sanctum, there will be interest in whether there is a change in direction for the sport over the next four years, in terms of new thinking and for the sport to be doing its best to 'sell itself' and expand both in participation and in presence.

Good sailing!

Solid boatspeed, nearly flawless tactics and crisp crew work resulted in two bullets for Alinghi in the 2nd day of the Desafío Trophy.
