Editorial: Rough ride in HSBC Coastal Classic

Taeping was a late at the start of the 2008 HSBC Premier Coastal Classic   Richard Gladwell
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's NZ newsletter for 25 October 2008

Taeping (Greg Roake) was the first to finish the 2008 HSBC Premier Coastal Classic, finishing at 0023hrs this morning.

In an event marked with gear failure and withdrawal, the white catamaran had her issues on the startline of the race after problems, understood to be with a headboard, she resolved those inside the relative calm of the Waitemata and started almost 10 minutes late.

Her mainsail woes continued with a couple of stops along the route, which was plagued with strong headwinds as predicted all week.

Behind her a couple of smaller multihulls in PredictWind.com and Hooters performed exceptionally in the conditions punching well above their weight.

First monohull home was V5 (Simon Hull), which started life as a TP52, and she was followed in by Sportivo and Ragtime, or Infidel, as she is better known to some older hands.

PredictWind.com was the next multihull to finish, just after 0435hrs, for a time of over 16 hours, with Hooters finishing 10 minutes later.

The number of withdrawals continues to mount, with 45 boats electing not to start, given the gale warning that was issued for the Cape Brett area. Winds would seem to have been in the 35-40knot mark from a direction just east of north, making a hard sail up the Northland coast before turning for the finish line at Russell.

Others took the attitude of attempting to make it to Kawau and then making the decision whether or not to continue from that juncture. At this stage it would seem that about half the fleet will be marked down down as did not finish, or did not start.

Serious casualties seem to be relatively few, with no boats lost (save for one marked 'not recovered') at the entrance to Mangawhai harbour, however her crew have all been rescued safely.

One crew member was taken off a yacht after a fall, and suffering suspected broken ribs.

In this issue we have full coverage of the race, and will be continuing, and will continue to provide updates during the day on www.sail-world.com. Coverage is also being provided on the official website www.coastalclassic.co.nz, by Zoe Hawkins who is doing an excellent job.

In this issue we have featured several image galleries taken at the start. For those on slow internet connections there may be some delay in downloading. For those on iphones and similar, with a reasonable connection, they make excellent viewing and have good download speeds.

Also included in this issue is the news that Virgin Money, also known as Speedboat, the supermaxi built and outfitted in New Zealand by Cookson Boats, Southern Spars and North Sails NZ has been forced to break off her transatlantic record attempt, after being struck be a huge wave, splitting her mainsail irreparably.

All are OK aboard and she is returning to Bermuda, possibly for another record attempt.

The America's Cup is back on the chopping block again, with the release of a letter from Larry Ellison to Ernesto Bertarelli saying that all challengers have to be included in the reconstruction process, and not just those who meet the pre-conditions set by the Defender.

In the media statement, Ellison and BMW Oracle racing accept some of the 'vision' of Ernesto Bertarelli, but are not happy with other aspects, and are most unhappy about the process that is being conducted.

In the Volvo Ocean Race, Green Dragon was first around the gate off Brazil, 23 minutes after midnight on Thursday night (NZT) - Sail-World's prediction was for midnight using information from Expedition and PredictWind.com - which is very good, even if we do say so ourselves.

Now the fleet is on the remaining 3,500nm to cape Town and are expected to make a fast trip through the South Atlantic.

Full reports and images are in this issue.

And if you didn't make it to Russell in the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic don't forget to get down to Sailors Corner, Westhaven to check out the great offer is still available from Line 7, who were offering a massive almost $200 discount on their line of offshore gear, plus a free gear Line 7 bag, priced at $100. It's a great deal, for some great gear - but it is only available at Sailors Corner in Westhaven. Be in while it lasts.

Line 7 is the Official Clothing Supplier to the Coastal Classic and a Race Division sponsor, and this is a great deal if you need some new kit, or someone you know is a little wanting in this regard. Don't forget their great deal on Coastal Classic clothing.

Good sailing!
