Asia's racing fleet is getting ready for the regional busy season, starting next month. The Hong Kong big boats line up for the RHKYC's China Coast Regatta 10-12 October, and then the blue water fleet heads for Nha Trang on the Vietnam Race on 15 October. After that it is the little boats' turn in Hong Kong, with the Hebe Haven 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race over the weekend 18/19 October. The 2nd China Cup International Regatta takes place 24-27 October – plenty of fireworks, for sure. 14-22 November are the dates for the annual Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, and the Phuket King's Cup takes over 29 November – 06 December. Meanwhile, there is the Lipton Trophy pursuit race in Hong Kong (22 November) followed by Hong Kong's biggest fleet turn-out for the year, the Loro Piana Around-the-Island Race (2 November).
The final event of the World Match Racing Tour, the Monsoon Cup, is going to be tricky to see for some of us, as it has recently moved itself into an overlap (03-07 December) with the King's Cup. And the Volvo Ocean race fleet arrives in Singapore in December too, complete with PR hoop-la, in-port racing, and Extreme 40s in tow.
And we haven't even mentioned January 2009...
Two major news items on the America's Cup – first, the newly-announced Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, to be sailed in Auckland, immediately attracted interest from 23 entrants, making us all wonder if it might instantly eclipse the America's Cup itself. Same teams. same people, same boats, same racing. And then, as if in reply to all that other interest, Ernesto Bertarelli called a private one-on-one meeting with Larry Ellison. Who wouldn't like to have been a fly on a wall for that pow-wow? Although no settlement was reached, at least the principals of the Defender and the Challenger of Record are meeting and talking for the first time in over 12 months.
By contrast, in New Zealand one of the Sunday papers carries a story of a former Team New Zealand member being 'cash-strapped', due to the America's Cup impasse, and forced to put some of his sailing crew uniform up for auction.
Maybe, just maybe, there is a real risk that peace will have broken out by the end of 2008, and maybe the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series will be the first step in the on-the-water reconciliation.

However, sailing struggles to make it in the mainstream media and on TV. Why is this?'... [more]
