The big story of the week has been the break-up and capsize of Franck Cammas' Groupama 3 as they scooted past New Zealand chasing the Jules Verne title. Here's the full story, from when they changed track (northwards) to avoid some heavy weather, right up to taking the damaged tri under tow. Nobody was hurt at all during this drama, to the extent that nobody even got sent to hospital after landing in New Zealand. Amazing...

World Match Racing Tour has announced a Qualifier Series for entry to the ten main WMRT events, and the RC44 circuit is about to take off again.

Here in Hong Kong entries for this year's Rolex China Sea Race seems to have stalled at a mere 12 boats, but a quick glance at the names shows that most of the 'usual suspects' have not got their forms in yet. Entries close at the end of the month, but the RHKYC Sailing Office will be more than pleased if you get your entry in sooner! Sponsored this year by Rolex, the China Sea Race is down in the book as one of the Great Yacht Races of the World, and it is Asia's only full-on Cat 1 Offshore Race. Groupama 3 update - under tow, upside down

Sail-World's sources in Dundedin have countered earlier reports that the trans-oceanic racing multihull, Groupama 3 which capsized on Monday had been righted, as was earlier reported by news sources this morning. A big salvage operation is underway off the North Otago coast, as the rescued French sailors try and recover their capsized racing yacht. They reached the wreckage on Wednesday morning in conditions described as ideal for the difficult job. Groupama salvage attempt gets underway

Media sources in New Zealand are reporting that a salvage mission has been launched for the 32metre French trans-oceanic multihull, Groupama. Franck Cammas and friends have chartered a salvage vessel and were due to leave Dunedin at 2000hrs tonight (NZT). The crew of Groupama 3 have posted some incredible video taken just after the 30 metre multihull capsized off New Zealand on Monday. The sequence shows the crew down below retrieving grab bags and tools, then using the escape hatch to get out onto the main hull and speak to rescuers.... [more]


Groupama 3 describes capsize off New Zealand

Whilst sailing off New Zealand, Groupama 3 capsized following the breakage of her port float. The ten men were very quickly airlifted via helicopter by the New Zealand rescue services and taken to Dunedin (South Island). They will do everything they can to salvage the trimaran once the conditions on zone have improved.... [more]

Groupama 3 capsizes in Pacific Ocean

'We have just capsized. The leeward float broke in two, leading to the breakage of the two beams and then the subsequent capsize. The crew is all together, taking refuge inside the central hull of Groupama 3. None of the 10 crew are injured. There are 5 to 7 metre waves and 25 to 30 knot winds. The seas are breaking and for the time being we're not putting anyone outside'.... [more]

The French trimaran Groupama 3 is believed to have capsized off Dunedin during a world non-stop record attempt. The yacht is the only one known to be in the area.
