News from the Boating and Boats scene
It’s been an interesting week for the Powerboat-World team, with heavy thunderstorms which hit on an almost daily basis across South-East Queensland. Our Lake Macquarie head office was blasted with a hail storm, not heavy enough to cause damage to boats on the water, but enough to take the power out; hence this newsletter missed its usual Friday slot.

The 2007 Offshore Challenge was a huge success and now it looks like the 2008 event will be much bigger again, with works teams and privateers doing battle. The navigational race/rally format takes competitors on a 700 nm boating marathon from Hobart on the Southern Ocean, across Bass Strait to the finish in Port Philip Bay, making the Australia Offshore Challenge truly Australia’s ultimate power boat adventure. It start of February 21st 2008
Powerboat-World will be bringing you more news on that over the coming weeks.
This week we have another great article from OCEAN Magazine, the Australian luxury marine journal on modern manufacturing materials.
We reveal that one of boating’s most respected names, Halvorsen, now has Queensland distributorship and we take a close up look at the recent Grafton Bridge to Bridge water ski race, which saw the first Australian appearance of a new Evinrude E-Tec engine.
And it’s only two weeks to the inaugural Gold Coast Boat Show. It’s not only Gold Coast marine businesses supporting the show; we note there are Brisbane and Tweed Heads dealerships making strong contributions.
While we’re checking out the Gold Coast show, for many of our colleagues all eyes will be on the 48th Fort Lauderdale (October 25-29) and we’ll bring you a full report on that massive show after its conclusion.
On the home front again, the industry has been alerted to an important conference scheduled for Adelaide in May, ’08. You’ll find a brief preview of the conference here together with more news from the recent Mercury Marine Expo ’07, an informative and enjoyable event that drew more than 500 Mercury dealers, suppliers and media.
We will have the story and lots of pix from yesterday’s F1 Superboat Round at the Penrith Sydney International Regatta Centre online later today.
It’s all here in Powerboat-World.com

|Sophomore Heroism Saves Captain |
By George Brennan, Cape Cod Times/Sail-World Cruising,
When people talk about yachts and losing life in the one sentence, the image is of heavy weather, man-overboard, or the sinking of the yacht in turbulent seas. But a recent story of the life saving fast action of a marine sophomore in US town Sandwich is a lesson in just how easy it can be to end up in life threatening trouble when you're not even at sea. Would you imagine a very experienced seaman could almost drown while trying to refuel his yacht?... [more]

|YachtShare: pleasure without the pain of ownership |
By Media services,
Summer is fast approaching and there’s a tin of anti-foul waiting for you in the garden shed. Your boat has spent the winter months on the mooring, but now the weather is starting to lighten and you want to spend balmy summer days cruising, racing or just mucking about on the water with family and friends. But before you get out there the boat needs to be slipped, anti-fouled, costly repairs and routine maintenance done, systems checked and the cabins cleaned. This is the least fun and most time consuming side of boat ownership. And the reason why increasing numbers of sailors and power boaters are choosing an easier way to get on the water.... [more]
