Another busy week for the Powerboat-World team
We’ve barely recovered from the rigours of the Sydney International Boat Show and now were preparing to head up to the Queensland capital for the Brisbane International Boat Show.
|Bob Wonders Powerboat-world.com -|
You can catch up with some of the Brisbane news in this issue.
For those who think fishing is the best thing since, well, sliced bread perhaps, the Brisbane show will rate as a must visit.
It has certainly been what one might term a 'newsy week.'
In a somewhat dramatic move, that which was the Boating Industry Association of Queensland, known by its initials as the BIAQ, has changed its name to Marine Queensland.
The reasoning behind the decision will be revealed in this issue of Powerboat-World.
For the true fans of offshore powerboat racing, with the eagerly awaited Offshore Superboat Series scheduled to begin off Redcliffe (September 9) and Townsville (September 23) to whet the proverbial whistle I’ve taken a look back at the sport’s early days, when offshore racing was dominated by a group of colourful American boat builders and assorted millionaires.
They were the days of genuine open ocean racing, just made for the deep vee hulls which reigned supreme before the catamaran era.
In a future issue I’ll attempt to paint a similar pen picture of the sport’s early days in Australia, when men like industry legends John Haines, Tony Low, Peter Dean and Bruce ‘Sharkey’ Harris were the local versions of ‘colourful characters.’
Plenty more to look forward to as well, with Mercury Marine’s Expo 07 set down for September 13 and 14 at the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.
Powerboat-World will be there and we’ll be the first to reveal Mercury Marine’s plans for 2008 and take a close up look at the latest in Savage, Bermuda and Quicksilver boats and accessories.
All one needs to do to keep abreast of boating is stick with Powerboat-World.

|Handheld GPS's get National Geographic Topomaps |
By www.tmcnet.com/Des Ryan,
It's a start. We use a handheld GPS in our cockpit, clamped to the binnacle by a bicycle handlebar attachment. If you have an old fashioned boat without a cockpit data console, you may find, with us, that this is a great solution for easy single handed sailing. So the news that you'll soon be able to load National Geographic Maps directly offers the hope that it won't be long before we'll be able to load the world's oceans and waterways - maybe Cmap....
