New Optimists and Lasers are on the way for OSAF Youth Championships, Aitutaki, July 2011.
Optimist on Aitutaki Lagoon, Cook Island National Championships, October 2010
22 new Optimists have been bought, 12 by Rarotonga Sailing Club and 10 by the Aitutaki Sailing Club. All are targeted to be used for the Championships and then by each of the Clubs. Both Clubs have had an explosion of interest in sailing from young sailors and have enjoyed the extra coaching opportunities made available over the past year by assistance from Community Incentive Scheme NZAID.
The Project was aimed at strengthening the coaching and race management at each of the three main Clubs in preparation for the Oceania Single Handed Youth Championships in July, 2011 hosted by Aitutaki Sailing Club on beautiful Aitutaki Lagoon.
International Judge Andre Raoult ran the Race Management Course in October 2010 - immediately before the CI National Optimist and Laser 4.7 Championships. The new Race Officials were tested by running the Championships which also featured a friendly Hobie Cat competition. Lots of starts, and finishes and a faultless performance! Since then the Race Committee have run several other events in preparation for the OSAF event and are really looking forward to forming a Race Committee for the Event.
At present there are squads of Optimists and Laser 4.7 from Aitutaki and Manihiki training in Aitutaki and another squad of Optimists and Laser 4.7s training in Rarotonga.
Preparations for the Championships continue with key positions on the Organising Committee making sure arrangements are in place and the famed hospitality of the Cook Islands is ready for our sailing family.
