East Coast Windsurfing Championships - Riding the Wind, Vineyard Style
Sat, 3 Aug 2013
At the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, fifty windsurfers representing four different countries competed in three classes of racing Friday and Saturday. Races were cancelled Sunday due to no wind, but wind conditions for the first two days were gusty, challenging all levels of racers.
Each class was able to fit at least five races in over the course of the regattas.
The Sayre family of Vineyard Haven turned in strong performances on the water, with Nevin Sayre winning the Kona North American regatta and Rasmus Sayre taking first in the Olympic RS:X East Coast Championships, just ahead of Puerto Rico's Alejandro Monllor. Solvig Sayre was third in the RS:X fleet.
Younger sailers competed in the Techno 293 class, with Geronimo Nores and Steven Cramer of the Miami Yacht Club taking first and second in the Under 15 group, and Lucas Miranda of Puerto Rico coming in third. Competitors from the Miami Yacht Club also cleaned up in the Under 13 group. The Techno 293s sailed as part of the U.S. Sailing Junior Olympic Festival. Their next stop will be the World Championships in Poland, which begin next week.
Mikey Cosgrave of the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club won the Silver fleet races for novice sailors, with members of the American Yacht Club in Newburyport taking the second and third place spots. Vineyard Haven Yacht Clumb competitors Schulyer St. Germain, Sage White and Tommy Styron went one-two-three in the Bronze fleet races.
