A mixed bag of weather conditions were presented to the fleet at the start of the Tassie Trio Yacht Races. The Melbourne to Hobart's (Eastcoaster and Westcoaster) and the Melbourne to Launceston Race commenced off Portsea today. The breeze was fresh and sun was out, with many spectator fleet enjoyed the spectacle. At the 12.30pm start, Mal Eaton's Geelong entrant, Celeste timed the line perfectly to lead the lead, with Kevin Robinson's No Fearr, before being taken over by the larger Farr 52 Goldfinger.
Several yachts including Ninety-Seven, eXtasea, XLR8, Tevake and Gusto were squeezed out at the Committee Boat end, and forced to play catch up, which proved challenging as the wind dropped to nothing with minutes. Gusto gained ground to be at the turning mark first ahead of Goldinger and yesterday's Boxing Day Dash Winner Bandit.
As the fleet entered Bass Strait, almost an hour after the start, the anticipated 20 knot south-easterly came and sent the fleet to their respective destinations.
