Tanner Cup decided in Tauranga

Day 1 Tanner Cup:

Eight boats had some fantastic racing on the Tauranga Harbour today, the fleet were given a send off by 3-time winner, Jimmy Gilpin, as they headed off to sail in 8-12 knots of northerly.

The first two races were sailed in neutral tide and a steady breeze. Local sailor Cole Rippey BoP, won the first two races with some very close competition from Jackson Keon ND and Kate Stewart NH. The fleet returned for lunch as the front started to build over the Kaimais and went out for a third race sailed in the strong outgoing current in 12-18 knots of NN westerly. Again, very close racing with Cole getting his third win for the day. The fleet have hit the beach to be greeted by some of Tauranga's NZL Sailing Team members Peter Burling and Sam and Molly Meech.

Day 2 Tanner Cup 6 January 2014

The eight Tanner Cup boats headed out for another great days sailing on the Tauranga Harbour. There was a 15 to 18 knot SW.

Race 4 started with an incoming tide making for short upwinds and long downwinds. Cole Rippey BOP lead the fleet around the first mark chased by Kate Stewart NH. They had a great reach with fantastic views from the TYPBC clubhouse. BOP and NH traded places on the second beat and had a break of 30 seconds on the next 4 boats grouped closley together. The final beat was a cliff hanger and Cole got ahead and then lead Kate home at the finsh. Jackson Keon ND was third leaving him and Kate on equal points after 4 races.

It was all on for the fith race. This race also started with an incoming tide and 18knots of SW breeze. At the first mark Kate NH had a handy lead with Cole BOP and Jackson KeonNH boat for boat down the screaming reach. Jackson went for a quick Swim and Kate was a little consevative on her gybe; so Cole closed in at the wing mark. Everyone esle enjoyed the downwind blast and had sucessfule gybes. A great windward beat and Kate was just ahead at the windward mark the second time; but Cole slipped ahead with a better mark rounding. They are over a minute ahead of Jackson Keon NH and Harry Haslet A heading for the leeward (and last) mark for the race. At the final mark; Cole was ahead of Kate by 11 secs. The wind has moderated slightly to 12 to 15 knots SW. The tide is on the turn, so great sailing conditions on the Tauranga Harbour. Cole BOP has just won the fith race with Kate NH second. Jackson Keon N was third from Harry Haslet A fourth with Kate Sheldon WM fifth

Race six was sailed in an outgoing tide with a SW dying against a seabreeze trying to get started. Kate Stewart NH lead the fleet at the first mark hottly pursued by the fleet. A quick down wind and the fleet regrouped for a start at the bottom mark. Harry Haslett A and Matt Wylie C along with Cole Rippey BOP had a closely fought beat . Jackson Keon ND decided it was too hot and capsized his boat twice in this leg of the course... Cole came though with a final good windshift to win the race and the regatta. Six wins from six races. Kate Stewart second and Jackson Keon third.

It is a measuring day tomorrow with the Tauranga Cup starting on Wednesday 7th Jan 2014.
