Slow start and fast finish for ANZAC 200 Miler

The ANZAC 200 miler was a hard race for all and chucked many challenges at the crews. Very slow start with most boats under anchor for an hour or so at Stanley point in a strong incoming tide.

By about 10pm a light SE breeze had filled in and the fleet got underway again. The breeze quickly built 15 gusting 25 and the fleet had a fast beam reach to Kawau. Plenty of squalls with gusts as high as 30kts left some carnage with a few boats pulling out and Motorboat breaking the prod before Kawau.

The Div 2 boats had a deeper angle down to Sail Rock with reports of some good speeds. The beat from the Poor Knights and Sail Rock to the Mokohinaus was lumpy and unpleasant for all followed by a lay to the finish. Division 1 was taken out by Outrageous Fortune who stormed up the beat. Second was Coppelia and third Akatea who also won line honors finishing just after midday.

Bernice took a convincing double line and handicap win in Division 2 with Motorboat coming second and Unitec 2 third.

Motorboat also took the special prize of the Excel racing anchor supplied by Chains Ropes and Anchors for the first boat under 10.3m and built last century. Many weary crews this morning after raft ups and party's late into the night. Prize giving tonight at the Port Fitzroy Boat Club.
