At the end of racing on the first day of the 3.7 Nationals at Manly, 30 minutes north of Auckland, Derek Scott was leading the competition with two wins ahead of Rhys Johnson in second.
Various sailors held the lead not least John Elliott, but Derek seems to have superior speed. Conditions at Manly Sailing Club (Whangaparaoa) were superb, the wind was a NE of 15 knots and there were puffs of 20 at times.
There were really nice swells and waves coming across the race course that was positioned well out from the Bay.
The Course (triangle W/L) had 60 degree reach legs that were fantastic, the first reach of the first race alone, was worth the price of admission for the whole weekend. With the breeze and waves there were plenty of spills, even the race leader had a swim, the wing mark was crowded with upturned boat at one stage. Plus, it looks like we can do it all again tomorrow.
