The 2012 Zhik RS Tera National Championships took place over the weekend of 30th June – 1st of July at Burnham Sailing Club. This was no mean feat with two fleets, the Sports and the Pro’s totalling 98 competitors. With outstanding preparation and fore-sight, together with a band of talented and friendly volunteers, everything went without a hitch from launching and recovery to excellent race management in challenging conditions.

Saturday dawned bright and breezy. After a long sail out to the race course set in the mouth of the Roach, the sailors were met with 20 to 25 knots and choppy waters. With four races planned it was going to be a long day on the water.

John Hardy (PRO) ably assisted by Nick Hutton-Penman (Chief Mark layer) wasted no time in getting proceedings underway.

In the Pro’s, James Hutton-Penman dominated with three straight wins. This however, does not tell the full story as behind him, his fellow competitors were swapping places (and war stories) and keeping him honest.

With a 27 knot squall covering the race area, the PRO decided that the battle weary sailors had done enough and sent both fleets back up the river and home.

In the Sports, Sam Doble Thomson stormed out of the blocks winning the first race, with Alex Butler taking the second race. It was Henry Jameson however, who showed his intentions with two seconds and winning the third to take the day.

It wasn’t until later that we learnt that regattas around the country had been cancelled due to too much wind (Including the RS500’s at Stone and classes in The Round the Island Race) which only confirmed how the Tera Class is progressing.

The sailors were re-freshed with a hearty hog-roast and entertained by coaches, parents and fellow competitors belting out songs from well before their era at the Karaoke. It was evident from the lack of football and rugby playing that the legs were sore after an epic first day.

Sunday gave the PRO a slightly different problem. The wind had abated a little (Still 18 knots gusting 22!) and swung. This allowed the racing to be held off the clubhouse, much to the delight of the parents who didn’t have to endure the five mile walk from the day before.

The Pros were again led around the first race by James Hutton-Penman, however, with the bite taken out of the wind, it was clear that he was not going to have it all his own way. To complete the series, five races were planned and James had to ensure consistency to take the title. With race wins from, Tom Johnson, Will Taylor and Flynn Davies, James’s win in race 7 together with never being outside the top two gave him the crown.

The Sports showed how the depth of the fleet had improved with some of the closest racing ever seen. Henry Jameson started where he left off with a win but with all of his closest competitors hot on his heels. Race 5 told of how the Tera is now becoming established in the North and the talent now coming through. Ana Paterson battled throughout to get an impressive race win. However, Henry was still lurking with a third. Race 6 saw yet another race winner in Billy Vennis Ozane. Things were now getting serious and Henry stepped up to the mark and stamped his authority on the fleet with another race win. In the last race of the day, Alex proved his resilience to win and take the runner-up spot ahead of Billy in third.

Other prize winners were Freddie Peters who took the Selden Under 10 trophy and Hayling Island Sailing Club who secured the Champion Club trophy for the first RS Tera website
