In mixed fleet coastal racing where 140 boats are on the startline and not one of them are exactly the same, handicap results are the best judge of how well a boat and crew have performed in any one race.
The two major handicap winners in the fleet were 19-year old Harrison McKenzie, who designed and built Taboo, the winner on handicap in the multihull fleet. She was built with some help from his father, launched her recently, and this was their first major race. The Sandspit based boat sailed steadily but conservatively, to finish strongly at 2225hrs, comfortably taking the race away on a corrected time of 9 hours and 51 minutes. Sanga Na Langa finished second on handicap, and Magique placed third.
Meanwhile the monohull handicap result as measured by the PHRF system went to one of the three smallest boats in the fleet, T Rex, an SR26 owned by Graeme Schmidt from Auckland's North Shore. T Rex took the line and handicap double in 2011 but has sat the race out since then. Obviously the conditions suited the 7.9m boat.
AJ Reid's Aanarchy joined T Rex on the podium at tonight's prize giving in second place, with the Thompson 850 Waka in third. The top ten finishers are a range of boats types and sizes, reflecting the mixed conditions in the race where all entrants except for the very front runners who were delayed by light northerlies in the last miles into Cape Brett, had a steady sail north.
Complete results are available in the Top Yacht race management system.
