After over eight years New Zealand’s only specialist marine art and photography gallery finally closed its doors last month to make way for yet another bar in the Viaduct, Auckland's marine heart.
.
Well known marine photographer Will Calver who set up this small iconic place said, 'It was simply a money thing and bars can offer better returns than a family run specialist marine gallery'.
It isn’t all doom and gloom however, as the National Maritime Museum of New Zealand with whom Calver has a long standing relationship has offered to show and sell his work in the museum.
This is a fantastic tribute to the quality and standing that Calver’s work has attained over the past 10 years. Becoming well known for his artistic and classic limited marine prints both at home and abroad .
With over 150,000 visitors a year this is sure to only increase the popularity of his already sought after work.
Today the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Awards announced that Will Calver's entry had made the Final 20 on the basis of a public vote from 140,000 visitors. The awards are open to professional photographers from all over the world. Its goal is to pay tribute to their work, to provide them with a promotional platform and to help promote the sport of sailing to a wider audience.
No less than one hundred and twenty yacht racing photographers from all over the world submitted the photograph of their choice for the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award 2014.
The votes are now closed and the top twenty pictures – chosen by the public – are presented in this gallery. Two prizes will be awarded on December 11, in Barcelona, during the World Yacht Racing Forum:
- The Prize of the public, awarded following votes from the public on Internet that narrowed the field to twenty entries
- The overall winner selected by delegates of the World Yacht Racing Forum.
