Noelex 22 Nationals at Plimmerton Boating Club

Winning Team from Cougar and our Sponsors from Seaview Sails - Noelex 22 Nationals Sandra McGill

Local sailor Alf Saunders and his team sailing Cougar have won the Noelex 22 Nationals.

Plimmerton put on its best weather for the Noelex 22 National Contest with a mixture of conditions tailor made for what turned out to be a very successful contest. Sailed over three days the 13 boats entered of which, 8 were from Plimmerton along with the 1 from Tauranga, 1 from New Plymouth and 3 from Auckland all enjoyed a well run contest controlled by local race officer Tony Brown.

The racing was close and after the first two days sailing in light winds it was very clear that going into the third day with two races to sail every point counted. On the last day the wind increased and the ninth race finished with the three top boats, Double Dark, Mistress and Cougar crossing the finish line in the same order and with all accumulating 22 points each at what was the last race of the series.

As is well known in sailing it’s not all over till all outstanding matters are attended to. If the finishing places in the ninth race had have stayed as is, Double Dark sailed by Grant Ransom would have won on count back however Mistress skippered by Paul Sloane protested Double Dark, however the matter was decided by arbitration and Double Dark having accepted the 40% penalty was relegated to fifth place equal for the race.

On count back Cougar took out the overall first place position, Mistress second place and even with the fifth place penalty applied, Double Dark still managed third place overall.
