This is the second year that Nespresso have joined with the RNZYS to bring a very unique and rewarding experience to young New Zealanders, and is again sold out with the full 10 yacht club teams.
'Nespresso globally supports sailing from grass roots level, through youth development and to the pinnacle of the sport with the sponsorship of Emirates Team New Zealand during the 34th America's Cup', says Guillaume Chesneau, Nespresso Country Manager, New Zealand.
'The RNZYS Nespresso National Youth Training Week delivers quality sailing experiences and coaching from the country's best instructors ensuring a healthy future for our next generation yachting stars'.
Coach of the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme Guy Pilkington commented: 'Over the past two years working with Nespresso we have really taken this week and all it represents to a new level of professionalism. This year I am pleased to be joined by assistant coach and Youth Programme graduate Garth Ellingham.'
Ellingham is part of the Waka Racing Team helmed by fellow Graduate Phil Robertson who just last week won the Monsoon Cup and placed third overall in the World Match Racing Tour.
'It is fantastic to have Garth joining us for the week; he is certainly sailing at the highest level of match racing and knows how to make a keelboat boat go fast! I also have a group of 12 of my current Youth Training Programme members here. They sail onboard with the teams during the first couple of days which helps eliminate any teething problems and they can show the crews everything from rigging, de-rigging and all the manoeuvres. All of us look forward to this week; it’s really great fun and infectious being around all these kids who just love sailing!'
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron established the National Youth Training Week at Kawau Island in 1989. Each year yacht clubs from around New Zealand are invited to send a four person youth crew to share in the intensive sailing experience synonymous with the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme. This intensive week of training gives young sailors the opportunity to receive intensive theoretical and practical instruction in the various aspects of competitive keelboat racing on the Squadron's fleet of 10 Elliott 7 metre yachts. Many national sailing bodies offer this type of training to only their high performance teams.
The training week's popularity is building year on year and the RNZYS is delighted to partner with a brand such as Nespresso to continue to produce quality youth sailors of tomorrow.
