Kerikeri High and Westlake Girls Victors at Team Sailing Nationals

Westlake Girls on the startline - Secondary School Team Sailing Nationals Darryl Torckler

The Secondary School Team Sailing Nationals wrapped up today, with another day of fine weather and light winds at Algies Bay.

The open division was won by Kerikeri High School, who finished the preliminary series in first place and never looked under threat during the finals. Second place went to Lindisfarne College, who qualified sixth for the final series, but stepped up to win their quarter-final against Mahurangi and semifinal against Christchurch Boys. St Kentigern outsailed Christchurch boys in the petit final for third place. Fifth went to Mahurangi and sixth to Westlake Boys.

The girls’ final consisted of a 3-round series between the top four all-girl teams, Westlake Girls, Marlborough Girls, New Plymouth Girls and Nelson Girls. Westlake were the only girls team to make the open gold fleet, but still only managed a one-point victory over Marlborough Girls, decided on the last race of the day. New Plymouth Girls were third.

The top three teams in the Open and Girls divisions will contest the NZ vs Australia InterDominion, and Girls Invitational Regatta respectively, both to be held at Algies Bay in October.

Many thanks to our sponsors Mahurangi Technical Institute and to the Jane Gifford Trust. Recognition is also due to the very large team of volunteers led by the indefatigable Ross Sutherland, who has organized the Nationals, InterDominions and regional development of Team Sailing for several years.
