ABN Amro during the in port race of the 2006 Melbourne Stopover TEAM ABN AMRO/Jon Nash
In a week when the Volvo Ocean Race has been pumping out the announcements, here is another. Only thing is, this one is not official. In just the last little while, Mark Turnbull OAM, and a well-known racing official from Melbourne have been in discussion with Volvo Ocean Race Executives.
When asked for comment about it, the Olympic Gold Medallist from 2000 in the 470 said, “Clearly I, and I am sure most sailors (and Volvo), would be keen to come to Melbourne, and equally to have an Australian entry. It all comes down to money.” Well yes it certainly does, as always.
So when pressed further the response was, “I am unfortunately not in a position to say anything further, however if something happens I think that it would happen relatively quickly one way or the other.”
Now with those words you would have to think that it is all about a stopover, but given the costs of such, along with the compaction of the overall timeline, it could be more about a pit stop to break up the massive Cape Town to Hong Kong leg. So we’ll see and yes, we’ll keep digging too!
