Fleet converges on Mark 2 - Waitara Regatta Jonathan Crane
Waitara Boating Club hosted their annual regatta over the weekend with the biggest fleet of centerboard dinghy’s turning out for years.
A great breeze saw three races completed on day one, and some very close racing with the fleet of 50 boats on the river and with the many classes competing you had to keep your wits about you to avoid other boats.
Day two had a twist early in race one with a 180 degree wind shift closing all fleets together at the mark causing the biggest raft up I have ever seen, after everyone had sorted themselves out and the new breeze had filled in, sailors had a lovely 6-8 knots to complete the two races for the day.
Great work from the Waitara Club and support from the New Plymouth and Wanganui clubs made this regatta a real success. This has to be the best venue in the country for spectators, with the action so close which also worked well on the Sunday as part of the Volvo National Sailing & Boating day.
The Waitara Boating Club now look forward to hosting the 2014 Hansa Class Nationals 21-23 March in conjunction with the newly formed Taranaki Sailability.
