The Dominant 2014 Australian Hansa Class Championships commenced today at the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club in South Australia.
A fleet of 56 sailors from seven States and Territories will contest eight races for each of four Hansa Classes over the next three days. It is the National Championship for all the Hansa classes, except the SKUD18, who had their Nationals at Pittwater in March.
Practice races were held today in a moderate to fresh southerly. Allister Peek (ACT) comfortably led the Hansa 2.3’s, while Christine Elliott and David Staley (VIC) took out the 303 two-person race. Graeme Martin (WA) was the first Liberty across the line with Rod Viney (TAS) winning the 303 single-person practice race.
Conditions are expected to be lighter over the next two days, with stronger breezes returning for the finale on Easter Monday.
Competitors tonight are enjoying a BBQ following the official opening and welcome by Organizing Committee Chairman, Bryan Southcott, Councillor Keith Parkes of Alexandrina Council, Managing Director of Principal Sponsor, Dominant, Chris Short and AHCA President, Russell Phillips.
