Audi China Coast Regatta - Long and trying day 2

by RHKYC Media on 12 Oct 2014
China Coast Regatta 2014 RHKYC/Guy Nowell http://www.guynowell.com/
It was a long and trying day for the Race Officer at today’s Audi China Coast Regatta, with a dearth of breeze in the Lamma patch forcing Inge Strompf-Jepsen to seek out a course in Tai Tam Bay, where 8-10kts of northerly was on offer. With a limited race area available, Strompf-Jepsen set a geometric course with a windward mark at 1nm for Racer 0 and IRC Premier and 0.7nm for Racer One and Two, IRC Cruiser and HKPN.

During the first start sequence, Xena and Clove Hitch made contact in the final minute, resulting in the retirement of both boats from the day’s proceedings. The second start was reserved for IRC Racer One and Two with a different three-lap course configuration, leaving HKPN and IRC Cruiser to take the last start.

After some fiercely competitive racing with boats using both sides of the race course to maximum effect, OneSails Racing emerged victorious in Racer Zero, while Island Fling took the honours in Racer Two and Mojito in Racer Three. DEAII corrected out to a win in HKPN, while Lady Butterfly kept a clean sheet in IRC Cruiser.

With a heavy schedule to get through and a threat of dying breeze, Strompf-Jepsen elected to start the Cruising fleets on their islands course, sending them out to TCS1 and Two before returning via Sung Kong island for a finish at Beaufort. The course was then reset for a windward / leeward for the Racer divisions, resulting wins for Team Beau Geste, EFG Bank Mandrake 2 and Whiskey Jack before the fleets were sent on a short islands course in 10kts of breeze to finish the day.

In the start sequence for Racer One and Two, a start line fracas between Island Fling and Ambush was to end up in the protest room after racing but did not affect boat of the day, EFG Bank Mandrake 2, who recorded her second win of the series after a two hour race to draw within one point of Island Fling. OneSails Racing also recorded another win, to put them within one point of Team Beau Geste in the overall standings.

In spite of shortening the course at Sung Kong, the breeze dropped to under 4kts and it was a fight to get the final boats home. Andiamo stuck to her guns to finish in the dark and claim a result, only 12 minutes before her cut-off.

Dexter 2 leads the Racer Two division after consistent performances throughout, while Mojito, lying third, took another bullet and win on corrected time to draw within two points of Whiskey Jack. In Premier, Lighthorse recorded another two wins for the day to top the standings, while Wicked leads HKPN and Lady Butterfly leads IRC Cruising.
