Aquece Rio Int'l Regatta - Medals to be decided in four classes

by Daniel Smith on 9 Aug 2014
2014 Aquece Rio - Nacra 17 fleet ISAF
Racing in the 49er, 49erFX, Finn and Nacra 17 will conclude on Friday 8 August with the Medal Races across the four fleets bringing their racing to a close at Aquece Rio – International Sailing Regatta 2014.

All racing will take place inside Guanabara Bay and the conditions are set to be fair across the three race courses that will be used. Pão de Açucar, Escola Naval and Ponte will experience a south west breeze around 10-15 knots which should make for an excellent racing day.

Giles Scott (GBR) wrapped up gold on 7 August in the Finn however the remaining medals are all to play for. Jorge Zarif (BRA) will look to wrap up a medal on home waters when racing commences at 12:00 local time on the Pão de Açucar race course.

The Nacra 17 will follow at 12:50 and just five points separate the top three, so it will all boil down to the final duel.

The 49er and 49erFX fleets will sail three single point theatre style races after the Finn and Nacra 17 have concluded racing.

There is no separation at the top of the 49er with Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) and Julien D’Ortoli and Noe Delpech (FRA) tied on 19 points. Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) are third on 26 points. They will start their first race at 13:45.

Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) will take a five point lead into the three single point theatre style races. They lead on 10 points with Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (NZL) second on 15 points. Olivia Price and Eliza Solly (AUS) sit third on 22 points. The fleet will start racing at 15:00 local time.

The Men’s and Women’s 470 will race inside the bay for the first time on the Ponte course and will commence at 12:00 with three races scheduled. The Lasers will race on Escola Naval and also have three scheduled races.
