Thirty New Zealand Secondary School teams entered the 2015 Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championships, hosted last week by Lake Taupo Yacht Club.
Sailing was held over five days, with a variety of conditions to test the sailors.
The teams were initially ranked in to three fleets, with repechages at the end of the first two round robins, to enable team to progress up or down the ladder, with a system of regatta points being used enabling all results to be utilised.
The Gold and Silver fleets were a few races short of completing three full round robins, but due to being over 80% complete, the results could be counted.
Marlborough Boys College sailed consistently well to finish closely in third place, behind the long reigning champions, Kerikeri High School. Unfortunately Kerikeri was knocked off the number one spot after five years by Auckland Grammar School, who are the Secondary School Teams Sailing National Champions for 2015. The racing between these top teams was incredibly close, with all three teams winning a round robin.
Silver fleet was won by St Kentigern College who fought hard throughout the regatta.
Bronze fleet completed their three round robins, with a convincing win from Queen Charlotte, after a trying week.
Napier Girls’ High School was the first girls’ team, followed by New Plymouth Girls’ High School and Diocesan School.
